Poll: 5 Team League Scheduling (Explanation)

News Archive

We're taking a poll!

The problem is this (it's a good problem): our leagues are growing!  This season, we have 3 age groups who now have a sufficient number of players to form 5 teams!  We have every reason to expect that this will happen again next season.

The thing is - the odd number of teams creates something of a scheduling problem.  With an odd number of teams needing to play each other in a round-robin format, play a minimum of 10 games, and finishing it all up within a 10 week season, it is necessary to do one of two things:

  1. Play two double-headers per season per team.  The advantage here is that by using a 3 hour block of time, we can get all of the games in on the season in plenty of time, and you are playing on the same nights each week, but on one or two weeks of the season, your team will play a double header.  We try to 'spread the wealth' evenly among the teams.
  2. Play on two 'odd nights' during the season.  In this scenario, we schedule a 2 hour block on one night, and a 1 hour block on the another 'odd night'.  This is actually how we are supporting the 5 team leagues this season.  On the 'odd night', two teams play, and the net result is that this happens to teams at least twice a season.  The advantage to this format is that there are no double-headers.

So which do you prefer?  We'd like your input as we head into the Spring Season, so that we can modify our rink schedule (if possible) to fit your preference.
